(i) Advantages:
  1. The first advantage of oil and gas exploitation for the Irish economy is the creation of jobs. Jobs are created during the exploration phase and when the oil and gas are being produced, e.g. Corrib Gas Field.
  2. A second advantage of oil and gas exploitation for the Irish economy is an increase in tax revenue. Companies such as Shell pay taxes to the Irish Government, which helps the Irish economy.

(ii) Problems:
  1. The first problem that may arise from oil and gas exploitation is that they pose an environmental threat. Potential oil spills could cause alot of damage to Irish coastal areas. It would kill marine life and also cause serious harm to the Irish fishing and tourist areas.
  2. Another problem associated with exploitation is visual pollution, which damages the natural scenic beauty of areas. Oil rigs at sea are an example of visual pollution.
